Your production is in good hands. Here's how I work.

Pre-production

Showrunner & AD meetings

  • Agree on scope of work (production should provide a list of intimate scenes)

  • Access production bible

  • Set meetings with director and actors

  • Determine if IC support is needed for casting calls and notices for leads and BG

Script analysis & breakdown

  • Assess intimacy level and risk level of each scene

  • Flag modesty garment and barrier needs

  • Flag which departments need to be coordinated with (costumes, props, PD)

  • Determine closed set plans

  • Dramaturgy, if needed, to ensure cultural, social, and human portrayals are considered, intentional, and reflected authentically

Director meeting

  • Learn director's wishlist and storytelling goals

  • Get a detailed visual and tonal breakdown of each scene

  • Confirm requested intimacy and nudity levels

Actor meetings

  • Relay director's wishlist and goals

  • Determine actor's consent relative to scene expectations

  • Get general boundaries and preferences for working on intimate scenes

  • Flag any questions or concerns for follow-up

  • Review each intimate scene in detail

Background actors & stand-ins

  • If possible, contact all BG to let them know they'll be in an intimate scene

  • Determine if they'll need a full meeting ahead of filming

Riders

  • Review contracts and determine if a rider is needed

  • Draft rider language based on scene expectations and actor's boundaries

  • Lawyers finalize language

  • Production sends riders to reps — I'm on call and usually CC'd on all correspondence

  • Ensure riders are sent 48 hours before a scene requiring one and confirm they are signed on time

Note: rider correspondence can be extremely time-consuming, especially on A+ level productions.

Department collaboration

  • Producer/Director — follow up on any actor concerns or flags that need to be addressed

  • Costumes — modesty garments, underwear, and coverage needs; ensure everything is ordered on time

  • Props — anything actors handle in an intimate scene

  • Makeup/Prosthetics — anything the actor or director needs shown or covered

  • Production Design — from basics like sheets to safety issues for unusual surfaces or hard ground

  • Crew needs — particularly if the scene involves assault or potentially traumatizing material

Rehearsals

  • If pre-shoot rehearsals are available, discuss blocking, scene goals, boundaries, and choreography

Set Days

Director & actor check-ins

  • Day-of check-in to review any updates that couldn't be addressed prior to the shoot

  • Review any script changes

  • Check in with stand-ins and BG

Department check-ins

  • Connect and confirm plans with all departments from pre-production

Closed set protocols

  • Confirm all protocols are in place and each department knows what is expected

  • Confirm technical requirements for DIT and camera departments are being followed

  • Confirm actors know who will be allowed on a closed set and obtain their consent

  • Hold safety meeting

  • Address crew concerns and determine accommodations, particularly for assault or traumatic scenes

Blocking & rehearsal

  • Be present for all blocking and rehearsal

  • Finalize choreography

  • Finalize all costumes, garments, props, and any other items needed for the work

  • Ensure sanitary conditions for actors, including hygiene items like mouthwash

Filming

  • Be at monitor to advise director on movement adjustments or choreography refinements

  • Flag anything that may trip a rider

  • Work with Script Supervisor to note anything relevant for the editors

  • Have kit handy for any adjustments needed during takes — typically tape for slippage or clean barriers

  • Make in-the-moment adjustments to achieve the director's storytelling goals

  • Offer de-roling or scene closure practices to actors and crew, if requested

Post Production

DIT & Script Supervisor

  • Confirm footage has been properly marked and restricted

Set report

  • Send a detailed set report to production
